This validation method combines three kinds of evidence. First, isolate the hardest functional advantage and build from it; Wier began with the durability he saw in a Korean barbecue plate. Second, use the product repeatedly and change concrete design variables when performance exposes a problem, such as hot spots from a pan that is too thin or slow heating from one that is too thick. Third, test whether the near-final form attracts prospective users and whether demanding professional users find it useful. In the wild

HexClad's pan development

Wier saw durability in a Korean inventor's barbecue plate and worked with him to adapt the technology into a frying pan. Samples were changed when thin pans produced hot spots or thick pans heated too slowly. Wier then showed a batch of pans at Silicon Beach gatherings, where attendees reacted to the look, and later gave pans to chefs for a more demanding performance test.

Wier says the combined reactions gave him confidence in the pan's form and functionality, although he still describes the decision as containing risk.

Common mistakes

Confusing beauty with performance

People may want a product because it looks good. That response does not establish whether it performs its intended job.

Relying only on the founder

Wier's cooking experience informed the design, but he also sought reactions from prospective users and chefs. Founder testing is one layer, not the whole case.

Equating validation with certainty

Wier explicitly recalls uncertainty before going all in. Validation improves the evidence without guaranteeing commercial success.
